Waverley Development

The proposals for the Waverley Community will be for a new, self sufficient, sustainable community in line with government guidance, where people can work, rest and play.

Located in Rotherham but midway between Sheffield and Rotherham, the Waverley development will be a 741 acre (300 ha) new mixed use site on former industrial and mining land creating a unique environmentally and ecologically sound community providing a range of approximately 4,000 homes, set within a high quality landscaped setting.

Key features of the project include the development of shops, restaurants, schools, sweeping green leisure spaces, woodland and lakes to establish a lifestyle orientated community with a sustainable transport system.

The community will form a major part of the redevelopment of the Waverley site that also includes the Advanced Manufacturing Park, which is already being developed, and Highfield Commercial, a 60,000 sq m office and hotel scheme by Helical Governetz, a joint venture partnership, offering new employment opportunities to help assist the economic regeneration of the area.

The site has been used for more than 200 years for coal mining and industrial activity, including most recently as a large Coking Works. In 1995, opencast mining of the site began as part of the £20m UK COAL-funded Orgreave Restoration Scheme. Opencasting ended in January 2006 and the restoration of the site is underway. This comprises contouring of development platforms, a major surface water drainage scheme (including reservoirs and lakes), landscape planting, ecological enhancements and the restoration of public footpaths. The restoration scheme is due to finish in May 2009.

Outline planning permission for the next phase of the redevelopment of the Waverley site, the Waverley Community, has now been submitted.
